What Does a Private Chef in Tuscany Cost? An Honest Breakdown

A private chef in Tuscany is quoted per booking rather than per head, because the number of nights you want cooked moves the total far more than the number of people at the table does. Cooking for six is not meaningfully cheaper than cooking for twelve; cooking six nights instead of two roughly triples the work.

What actually drives the number

  • Nights cooked: the dominant factor. Each night is its own shop, prep and service. Two dinners in a week is a very different booking from six.
  • Guest count, but weakly. Two to twelve is nearly the same job. Past about fourteen it needs a second pair of hands and steps up.
  • Courses and ambition: the lever with the most room in it. Three courses done properly beats five done thinly, and costs less.
  • Distance: a villa near Montespertoli or Florence costs less to cook in than one two hours south, because the driving is real time.
  • Ingredients: normally billed at cost on top of the fee. Ask any chef whether produce is included or extra before you compare two quotes — half the confusion in this market comes from comparing one of each.

What to change first when the budget is tight

Where the money is genuinely well spent

I cook in villas across Tuscany, most weeks of the season.

Two guests or twenty, one dinner or a full week. Tell me the villa, the dates and how many of you there are, and I will tell you honestly what is worth doing.

Questions, answered.

How much does a private chef cost per person in Tuscany?

I quote per booking rather than per person, because the number of nights cooked moves the total far more than the number of guests. Send me the villa, your dates and how many of you there are and you will have a realistic range back the same day, whatever hour you write, including what I would change first if it is over budget.

Are ingredients included in a private chef's fee?

Normally not — produce is billed at cost on top of the fee, and you see what the market charged. This matters when comparing quotes: a fee that looks higher may well include the shopping, and one that looks lower often does not. Ask both chefs the same question before you decide.

Is it cheaper to hire a chef for the whole week or just a few nights?

A few nights, comfortably, and it is usually the better holiday too. Each cooked night is a separate shop, prep and service, so three dinners costs roughly half of six. Most families settle on the arrival dinner plus two or three others and eat out the rest.

Does the villa's location change the price?

Yes, though less than people fear. What matters is driving time, because it is time taken out of every single service. A villa around Florence, Chianti or the Montespertoli countryside is straightforward; something two hours further south means the day starts earlier and the quote reflects it.
